Assignment
Respond to colleagues post below
Colleagues post;
For this week's discussion assignment, we were asked to rank three applicants for an Associate Professor of English position. The "job posting" provided by GCU provides us with a list of academic
experiences that the ultimate candidate would possess.Having served on numerous hiring committees, I have learned that resumes are only the beginning of a selection process, with interviews and
campus visits the ultimate way to make a final decision regarding an applicant, and those can even be misleading (I've had the misfortune of helping in the hiring process of a wolf in sheep's
clothing). With that being said, my recommendation would be to offer Dr. Carlos Ruiz the position. Dr. Valerie Simpson would be my second choice, and Dr. Clement Frost my third choice.
Dr. Ruiz is my first choice because he has a history of working with underserved populations and outreach programs. He claims that his talents lie in teaching responsibilities in first-year writing
composition and ESL. He also has experience working as a tutor in the writing lab. He has already had experience with implementing technology and eLearning in his English composition courses.
Finally, although he only has five years teaching experience, his belief system is in direct alignment with GCU's. Not only is Dr. Ruiz passionate about teaching, he's passionate about social
change by helping minority populations achieve their dreams and reach their potential.
Dr. Simpson is my second choice because she does have six years experience in teaching writing courses, including first-year composition and rhetoric. She also has experience with online teaching.
My biggest concern with Dr. Simpson is her current status as instructor. Having a PhD with six years of teaching experience and still at the rank of lecturer throws up a red flag in my opinion. The
red flag makes me wonder if she has a negative record at her current institution that she is trying to bury.
Finally, I chose Dr. Frost as my third choice because I found it odd that with his extensive experience as Full Professor and the English Department Chair, that he would even consider an Associate
Professor position. In the world of academia, going from Full Professor to Associate is a demotion. Does he REALLY miss teaching that much? Or is he hiding something as well? Call me pessimistic,
but it just doesn't sit well with me.
