These tests are intended to demonstrate familiarity with, and critical comprehension of, the
readings and class lectures (including artistic examples), and screened videos.
The midterm test is scheduled for February 22nd online, under ‘Quizzes.’
Time limit: 3 hours
The online test will be offered from 7:00am on February 22 until 7:00am February 23rd.
As noted on our syllabus: Any schedule conflicts must be discussed with the professor 1-2
weeks in advance.
It will be marked out of a total of 60 points. Your answers must reflect and refer to the
materials/topics/art examples covered in THIS course.

    Your essay style answer in Part C will be graded according to whether it has:
    1) a thesis statement, what is your argument?
    2) organization, including supporting points to describe your thesis statement
    3) critical evaluation, discuss important criticisms that are discussed related to your essay
    4) Uses classroom examples; including lectures, lectures, or videos
    4) grammar and spelling, make sure your essay is easy to read and clear

    Essay Questions:
    1) What is the significance of an artistic ‘Renaissance’? Compare and contrast the Italian
    Renaissance with the Northern European Renaissance. How have these differing artistic
    developments been dependent on, and separate from, each other? Please use examples.
    2) How has the concept of the ‘artist’ changed and developed across Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries? What socio-political factors contributed to these changes. You are encouraged to discuss the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance (Italian / Northern
    European), The Protestant Reformation, and Catholic Counter-Reformation. Please use examples. bonus question: What THREE artists sculpted an image of David? (3 marks)
