Remarks by the President at the NAACP Conference. (2015, July 14)

Former prisoners have done their time and served their sentence. With that being said, there are certain rights that should be restored to them, such as being able to go to a job interview and having the right to vote. When they are released from prison and have served their sentence, former prisoners want to be able to live a decent life and get back some sense or normalcy with the life.

There are a number of reasons why former prisoners are denied these rights. One reason is that many people believe that former prisoners are still dangerous and that they should not be allowed to participate fully in society. Another reason is that many employers are reluctant to hire former prisoners, even if they have been rehabilitated. And finally, many public housing authorities deny housing to former prisoners, even if they have nowhere else to go. The denial of basic rights to former prisoners is a serious problem. It makes it difficult for former prisoners to reintegrate into society and to find a job. It also makes them more likely to commit another crime. There are a number of things that can be done to address the problem of the denial of rights to former prisoners. One thing is to pass laws that restore these rights to former prisoners. Another thing is to educate the public about the fact that former prisoners have changed and that they are no longer dangerous. And finally, employers and public housing authorities need to be encouraged to hire and house former prisoners. Here are some specific examples of how former prisoners have been denied their rights:
  • In Florida, former prisoners are not allowed to vote unless they have been fully restored of their civil rights. This means that they must wait 10 years after their release from prison before they can vote.
  • In many states, former prisoners are not allowed to hold certain jobs, such as jobs in the education or healthcare sectors. This makes it difficult for them to find a job and to support themselves.
  • In some cities, former prisoners are not allowed to live in public housing. This means that they have nowhere to go when they are released from prison.
