Watching movies and television has become North America’s predominant
pastime. As a result each person and society, as a whole, is deeply impacted by the messages communicated through these mediums.
Choose a movie and after watching the movie write a 1000 - 1500 word (approx. 4-6 pages) essay that analyzes a message or theme about God and spirituality that occur in the movie. The message or theme may be subtle or obvious. In instances where there are multiple messages or themes choose the one that strikes you as predominate. You will give a brief synopsis of the movie, communicate the message or theme that you observed, provide examples of how the message or theme was communicated, and a justification for why you agree or disagree with the message or themes of the movie.
In the introduction of the paper you must state your thesis statement to establish which theme/message you wish to address in the paper. Then provide a justification for why this theme/message was chosen over others in the film. Bear in mind that since section C is worth 50% of the mark, it should constitute the main body of the essay. To properly analyze your chosen theme, you must discuss at least TWO biblical passages that address the same theme, as well as at least ONE bible commentary or interpretation of that biblical theme. If you need help in this regard, please ask me for guidance – I will be happy to suggest some passages and verses to you.
You are strongly encouraged to use the McGrath book – “I Believe” – as one of your sources. This book discussed many important themes in Christianity, so if the theme from your movie is discussed in the book it would be a good idea to use it.
The paper will be graded based on:
a) Synopsis & Thesis (15%)
b) Message/Theme (15%)
c) Agreement/Disagreement & Justification (50%)
d) Grammar, Flow, Clarity, Structure. (20%)
The movie I choose is A time to kill (1996)
