Structuring a Tutorial Discussion/Facilitation
Social Work in Socio-legal Settings
Each student will participate in a small group facilitation of an assigned weekly topic and take joint responsibility for structuring and leading a tutorial discussion. For this assessment task students are expected to read all articles/chapters/websites listed for their particular week. This assessment is designed to facilitate students? ability to advocate and intelligently share a particular point of view on relevant socio-legal issues and situations. Students may choose to link this either with the placement they have completed or on an issue of interest. Students will be assessed on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis only on their ability to select, analyse and present the relevant issues and approaches in their chosen field/setting to the class. Please note: all students must contribute to the discussion during their chosen tutorial.
So, the first step you need to undertake is reviewing your articles/chapter or website information. When reviewing the information listed you might like to consider the following questions:
1. Is the purpose of the information clearly articulated in the abstract and/or introduction?
2. In your opinion is the article/chapter asking the right questions? What else could have been included?
3. Are the main arguments clearly set out and logical?
4. What else would you have liked to know and why?
5. Does the article report limitations or exceptions to the main themes/results? - Is the discussion balanced and does it consider differing points of view?
6. Does the concluding discussion in the article reflect the overall discussion or information presented?
This list is not exhaustive but is a start. I would like to stress that this is not a presentation in the usual sense so please no power points or DVD?s. The small group is only responsible for structuring the discussion and making sure that it flows. Each small group might like to construct a number of questions for consideration and discussion in the larger group which are relevant to their topic. For example, a generic question might be ? ?How does this reading/resource contribute to our knowledge in the areas of social work and socio-legal contexts??
Facilitation topic: Refugees, Asylum Seekers and the Law, Refugee re-settlement in Australia- a consideration of socio-legal issues
Facilitation question: ?Is off shore processing both legal and ethical??

Assessment requirements:
Kindly use the articles and readings above to write out/ structure the class facilitation. Remember that the facilitation must be based on the question ?Is off shore processing both legal and ethical?? Under the topic on Refugees, Asylum Seekers and the Law, Refugee re-settlement in Australia- a consideration of socio-legal issues.
I don?t mind if you write everything in a powerpoint slide format, if that is easier for you I don?t mind. But just make sure it is interactive and engaging and is evident that research and readings in regards to the topic question. You can add links to youtube videos if it helps. Kindly also construct a number of questions in the slides for consideration and discussion in the larger group which is relevant to the topic.
Feel free to use additional resources to structure the facilitation. I don?t mind additional references.
