Reading summary

There are four readings assigned for this module, one of which is a report from the Treaty Tribes in Western Washington (State of our Watersheds 2016 - please read pages 1-30, and 163-178), and one of which is an essay and photo illustration by a landscape architect (Kate Orff 2016). For this summary discussion, please synthesize and interpret the lessons from all of the readings. This will require you to "make sense" of the idea of environmental performance in an urban economic setting.
The first academic article (Turnhout et al 2007) examines the cultural tensions between science and policy, and how these relate to knowledge production and application; and the second academic article (Checker 2011) reminds us that environmental improvements can be enlisted to further marginalize the very communities who have suffered most from environmental injustice. What do these pieces, taken together tell us about the environmental and economic performance of urban spaces, currently and potentially?

  1. A general summary of the reading, communicating what you believe to be the central purpose of the reading. Please do your best to emphasize the meaning of the readings, not what the authors 'covered'. The goal is to discuss what you think authors are trying to communicate, making explicit reference to evidence from the text(s). (approximately 300 words)
2.Identify what you consider to be the three central arguments from the reading.
3.1nclude a quotation from the text that captures an important concept/theme/argument.
4.A critical reflection on the reading, making connections to other classes, readings, discussions, or experiences you have had; here you may also choose to raise questions, critiques, or other uncertainties you have about the reading. (approximately 200 words)
