"Race and ethnicity have been a focus in Biostatistics as they can provide strong tools that are needed in public health and medical domains. They have been used in numerous studies as variables that help find social gaps and study populations. This can help in accentuating the importance of social identity, cultural legacy, and measuring the impact of racism and discrimination. Also, Knowledge about different cultures and gender inequality can help one be highly informed on the ways to provide culturally competent care. In the research article discussed last week on the Hispanic self-employed men and women, we noticed that gender matters in self-employment as with a sample of 7760 we have only 36% of women self-employed which is a big gap. Women in many cultures whether in the occidental world or the third countries are still struggling to find their way up to financial availability and power. Much has been done as this number has been on the rising side because more and more women have been working hard to climb the ladder to economic freedom (Bari, 2021).
The difference in occupation did not surprise as gender difference in occupation and wage is a fact well known in almost every country in the world. Gender differences in income continue to be a debate and have been fought by feminist activists for so many years. With this research, fewer women were in the “executive, managerial, craft, precision production, and repair”, “Operators, fabricators, and Laborers”. Women were more likely in “service” occupations which as we know are lower-paying occupations.
In education, the difference between gender was not much as research has shown that women have worked hard toward their educational journey and have exceeded men in education as women now are more likely to have a college degree, get a bachelor’s degree, and have outperformed men scholastically at all levels of school (Schneider, 2013).
Self-employment can be a big determinant for economic freedom and benefits. Self-employers versus wage earners’ difference in income depends not only on the type of occupation they are involved in but also their level of education. In the research, the chi-square value was not given for “less than high school” and “some college” meaning that there is no significance to make a conclusion or a correlation.
