Group Assignment Question
Using the paper “Competing on the eight dimensions of quality’ by David A. Garvin, critically evaluate the eight dimensions of quality in relation to a company or department with which you are familiar in today’s business environment.
How do the eight dimensions contribute to the overall total effort of the business in achieving the highest quality levels in the delivery of its products and services?
Assessment: Group Project
Candidates will work in agreed group of two people on this project. The project report will consist of your presentation slides. (12- 14) slides
You are required to conduct an in-depth study of the eight dimensions of quality proposed by Garvin, and draw conclusions from your findings. You are required to provide a rational basis for your answer, detailing the implications of these deductions for the companies / department, their operations and the way they need to be structured.
Identify your standpoint and research literature to support your view. You are required to conduct an in-depth literature review of the concept of ‘touch points’ and draw conclusions from your findings.
Use the tools and frameworks you have been taught or read about, to describe the key quality issues. You may wish to consider tools and current quality management practices included in the course in commenting on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the company or department’s operations.
In order to develop a sound argument and discussion of the proposed topic / issue, you should use relevant academic literature, to support the recommended reading supplied on the ADSM LMS ( you find in the attached files).
In conclusion, justify the contribution of your study to the contemporary quality and operations management body of knowledge and practice.
Assignment: Useful Hints
This is a practical project! You really do have to go and research the company or department you are writing about, where possible visit it and analyse its performance for real! Hoping to do it via the internet is difficult to do if you want a good report.
Throughout this project you should be coming into contact with staff and managers. Use them as a valuable information source. Ask questions, observe what they do etc. However, never simply accept what they say without supporting evidence. Be sceptical! They may be correct, but everybody thinks that they are doing it the right way, it is your job to see if they are! You must apply the dimensions in a logical comprehensive manner. Do not just use bits in a haphazard manner, which just highlights select areas you want to show, as it will lead to an unbalanced report which will miss out many areas. You need to be balanced, give a critique, good and bad aspects, and use the literature you have discovered, this will help ensure you conduct a thorough analysis and derive valuable recommendations. The same is equally true for singing the praises of an organisation. Using the literature, you have discovered will help you identify why they are good or bad, and this will help you discuss the improvements or aspects worth benchmarking.
It is vital that your assignment demonstrates a number of elements. This is a practical project, and so should show those characteristics.
1. It should be prepared in a report presentation style, not a long essay it is a brief report to the management. Break it down into a logical sequence with a series of headings and sub-headings.
2. It should start with an abstract slide, giving a clear synopsis of the project.
3. Ensure you have a clear introduction to lead the audiences through the work.
4. Ensure you include a description of the company / department, its activities, market place etc, and the aspects of its operations that you are investigating.
5. Provide a clear aim, and rational objectives.
6. Ensure you make a comprehensive critical evaluation of your findings.
7. Give a description of the results leading into a discussion of the findings and their implications for the department.
8. Have a critical reflection on achievement of the report.
The work should be able to demonstrate three stages of academic/practical analysis:
A) Knowledge: demonstrating that the relevant models and frameworks exist.
B) Understanding: You know what the literature is actually saying.
C) Your ability to apply concepts and frameworks.
You should be able to use the appropriate models, apply them in a meaningful way to ask suitable questions, get useful answers that you can analyse, discuss the situation existing in the department and why it exists as it does, and make a critical evaluation.
This is coupled with the balance between description and analysis. Some of the former is necessary, but it is the latter that is vital. This demonstrates your understanding and particularly your ability to apply the theory and derive useful practical results, and understanding. It is these analytical aspects which represent the higher levels of learning that can be used a transferable skills valued by both academia and employers.
