Pygmalion Effect
Order Description
The Coach as a Leadership Educator (Dobbs, 2012) describes the Pygmalion Effect as ?a fundamental social psychological principle of self-fulfilling prophesy.? If you think your student-athletes cannot be trusted to perform leadership activities (or to grow in character), you are likely to create an environment that discourages the athlete from trying to lead (or grow)
Do you feel that you are using your platform as a coach to promote character in your athletes? Explain. When you read the definition of the Pygmalion Effect, do you find yourself questioning your current methods? Why or why not? What changes might you need to make to begin to increase the level of trust you hold that athletes can learn to lead and can grow in character?
