Putting Texts in Conversation
Order Description
Use both William Deresiewicz’s article “The End of Solitude” and Sherry Turkle’s chapter from her book Alone Together to make an argument about your relationship to technology. Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with their positions? What evidence will you use from both articles to support your main thesis claim? To do this essay effectively, you will need to put key points from each article in conversation with each other, and also relate both articles to your experience. Remember, when you agree or disagree with an article, you are doing so to a certain degree or extent. To what extent do you agree or disagree, and why? Even if you strongly disagree, you need to show a level of understanding of the author’s key points. Summarizing the major claims of both articles will be necessary for this paper.
Tactics: Consider how the articles by Deresiewicz and Turkle discuss the impact of social media and the internet on “the younger generation.” Both articles argue that the ways we read, think, and socialize have been significantly changed through our use of networked technology. Both articles also set up clear binary oppositions in their major claims. Try to identify some of those binary oppositions and use them to develop your own thesis claim.
