The case of the right fit The county health department is expanding in order to address some of the pressing public health needs in the community. Dr. Helms, the director, would like to fill one of the new job positions as soon as possible. The job involves the development and oversight of a new unit that will entail building community trust and participation for a new, innovative drug abuse prevention program. Drug abuse has been rampant in the local ethnically diverse community and standard approaches have fared poorly thus far. The two top applicants for the new position are fairly equal in terms of education and accomplishments; however, they differ in terms of their leadership style. Dr. Kim has the characteristics of a transactional leader, while Dr. Lewis fits the description of a transformational leader. Given the task at hand, which of the two applicants might be the better leader to motivate the staff to carry out the new program approaches. Upgrading the IT system As director of a public health department, Dr. Karsten is confronted with the reality that her department’s current IT system is badly out of date and needs a major upgrade in order to operate efficiently.
