According to Hall (2010) acculturation stress is seen as the adaption to getting used to a new culture. Getting used to a new culture is a lot of work mentally and physically, for both genders. In a study done by Castillo et al. (2015) they looked at the gender of Hispanic college students, and the effect it has on acculturation and acculturative stress. Being in college is stressful enough but having to acculturate to the culture around one’s self is even harder; according to Castillo et al. (2015) almost all Latino students have dealt with this scenario. It was founded that Hispanic boys accuralate faster than girls; not only that but: culture acquisition among Hispanic girls was strongly connected (rather than boys) and discrimination was more connected with Hispanic boys (rather than girls) (Castello et al., 2015).
Focusing on the study at hand, they used undergraduate students who identified as Latino; 758 Latina’s and 264 Latino’s (Castello et al., 2015). In the study they used questionnaires with subscales; the Stephenson Multigroup Acculturation scale measured one’s culture acquisition, the Multidimensional Acculturative Stress Inventory studied stress associated with acculturation, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale looked circumstances (e.g. affective, somatic, and interpersonal) connected with depressive symptoms (Castello et al., 2015). In the end, it was founded that Latino men had more depressive symptoms associated with acculturation than women; this could be because of gender roles within the culture (Castello et al., 2015).
Deriving from that research result, in order to reduce acculturation within Latino families there has to be a change in familial roles. For men to be the bread winner means that they have to deal with the culture around them a lot more than their families do; so, switching roles so that other adults in the family can earn a living can reduce acculturative stress. Going back to the college students, enrolling in more Hispanic programs and help groups can reduce their stress. If they are surrounded more by their own people they would not be as stressed, and if they learn more about their own culture they would not be so overwhelmed about being surrounded by another one. Re-leaving stress in another aspect of life and finding cultural outlets can help significantly when acculturative stress is involved.
