Ethical Considerations:

Research on violence and mental health can be sensitive and challenging. It is important to protect the participants involved in the research and to avoid causing them any harm. Some ethical considerations to keep in mind include:

  • Informed consent: Participants must be fully informed about the risks and benefits of the research before they agree to participate. They must also be given the opportunity to withdraw from the research at any time.
  • Confidentiality: Participants’ personal information must be kept confidential.
  • Debriefing: Participants should be debriefed after the research to inform them about the findings and to provide them with support if necessary.

Research Problem Statement:

The relationship between exposure to violence and mental health has been extensively studied, but there is still much that is unknown. For example, it is not clear how all types of violence affect mental health, or how the impact of violence varies across different populations.

My proposed research problem statement is to investigate the relationship between exposure to violence and mental health symptoms in a sample of adolescents. I am particularly interested in examining how the type of violence (e.g., physical violence, sexual violence, community violence) and the frequency of violence exposure are associated with different mental health symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, PTSD).

I believe that this research is important because it can help us to better understand the impact of violence on adolescent mental health. This information can be used to develop more effective prevention and intervention programs.

Ethical Considerations:

I will take the following ethical considerations into account in my research:

  • Informed consent: I will obtain written informed consent from all participants and their parents/guardians before they participate in the research.
  • Confidentiality: I will keep all participants’ personal information confidential. I will use pseudonyms and store all data in a secure location.
  • Debriefing: I will debrief participants after the research to inform them about the findings and to provide them with support if necessary.

I will also take the following steps to minimize the risk of harm to participants:

  • I will use a screening questionnaire to identify participants who may be at risk for experiencing psychological distress during the research.
  • I will provide participants with a list of mental health resources in case they need support.
  • I will have a mental health professional available to provide support to participants during and after the research.

I believe that the potential benefits of this research outweigh the potential risks. I am committed to conducting the research in an ethical and responsible manner.
