Instructions and Rubric
You will write a paper of 8-10 pages (double spaced) that addresses the following regarding your chosen treatment.

1. Description of the treatment and the arguments for its use (about 3 pages). Be sure to address the following:
   A) What problem(s) is this treatment intended to treat and in what populations?
   B) Provide a detailed account of the treatment
   C) Discuss the origins of the treatment (i.e., how it got started, developed, popularized, etc)
   D) Discuss what claims the treatment’s proponents make about
   E) Discuss the statements the proponents of this treatment make about other available treatments for this problem
2. Review the available research on this treatment (about 3-4 pages).
   A) Analyze 3 or more scientific research studies that have been done to investigate the claims you describe above.
   *Note: These must be peer-reviewed journal articles that describe the effects of the treatment on patients’ symptoms and functioning. They should not simply be published reviews of other studies, opinion pieces, etc..
   For each article describe,
   -The hypotheses
   -The study’s design
   -The results of the study
   -The author’s claims about what the results of the study mean.
   -Your thoughts on whether you agree or disagree with he authors’ claims about what these results mean.
   B) Describe your overall thoughts on the state of the evidence. And whether it supports or does not support the claims that proponents of this treatment make.

3. Discuss features of pseudoscience (about 1-2 pages)
   A)Discuss how 3 features of Lilienfeld’s features of pseudoscience (see reading on Canvas and class notes) apply to the way the pseudoscientific is being promoted or has been promoted.
4. Discuss an evidence-based alternative treatment that addresses the same problem as your pseudoscientific treatment (about 3-4 pages). Discuss the following
   A) Describe the treatment in detail. Specify what the treatment is, who provides it, how it is delivered, and what occurs during it
   B) Analyze 3 or more scientific research studies that have been done to investigate the effectiveness of this treatment. These must be peer-reviewed journal articles,. For each article describe,
   -The hypotheses
   -The study’s design
   -The results of the study
   -The author’s claims about what the results of the study mean.
   C)Discuss your thoughts on whether you agree or disagree with the authors’ claims about the effectiveness of the treatment
   D)Describe 2 research questions you think are still important to have answered about this treatment, and briefly discuss how you would do a study to answer these questions.
