Many changes are challenging and the ability to apply critical thinking skills to manage change is essential. Critical thinking skills allow business professionals to effectively solve problems (individually or with a team), make sound decisions and influence others based on valid conclusions. Everyday decisions and a constant evolution of strategic decisions must be made in order to stay competitive and profitable in any industry. In this project, imagine you are a consultant hired to advise the Executive Board on possible solutions to a major business issue they are experiencing. You will research a company with a current business problem. Then using reflective, analytical, and problem solving skills, you will write a comprehensive argument to determine what change in the company’s strategy is needed. Deliverable • 750 to 1,000–word paper Activity Details Perform the following steps:
Step 1: Research. Choose one of the following companies/business issues to research: • Johnson & Johnson > Baby powder causes cancer • Any automotive company > airbag recall • Cosco Kids > safety notices Gather as much information as possible on your chosen company. Look at websites, financial statements, press releases and outside news sources. Reflect on the problem identified. How did it become a problem? How does it relate to their current strategy? Is the problem a moral and/or legal one? As you begin to analyze the data, consider what the company will need to do to resolve the problem and manage their competitive status.
Step 2: Write a business report. For your chosen company/issue, develop a business report to be presented to the Executive Board. Provide a detailed narrative using the following questions/statements as a guide for the context of your report: • What is the problem? • What type of problem is it? • What is the outcome if the problem is not resolved, in a timely fashion? • At a high level, what are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the business issue?
• Write a comprehensive critical argument • Identify one solution and three alternative solutions to the problem. • Show evidence throughout of the critical thinking skills you used to evaluate the problem, consider options and identify solutions. Use these writing guidelines: • Include a cover page and references in addition to your required word count. • Use correct APA format. • Double–space text. • Use size 12 Times New Roman. • Use section headings to organize. (optional) • Indent paragraphs. • Include three in–text citations from course material.
