Power and Identity in the Middle East
assume the role of a researcher for a producer of
popular media. This could be a news channel, an author, documentary filmmaker, or some
other medium. This person or organization has hired you because they are creating a new
piece of media (perhaps a longform article, a 30-minute documentary to air on a news
channel, or an op-ed) focusing on a particular event or issue in the Middle East. Your task
is to write a report and briefing materials to help them create a more nuanced piece of
media addressing a particular event or issue in the Middle East.
You will select the event or issue to cover in your report. Your report will be
approximately 15 double-spaced pages and will contain five main parts:
- A short introduction presenting the event or issue, summarizing conventional
perspectives or a dominant perspective on this event or issue in the media, and
briefly describing your explanation or understanding of the event or issue (1
paragraph) - An analysis of existing media with citations and/or links (approx. 1 page)
a. What is the existing narrative about your issue? Based on what you’ve
learned in the course, what theoretical approach comes closest to
explaining how it is covered currently?
