Analyze the poem's line lengths (regular, irregular number of syllables?).
Look for a rhyme scheme (If it exists, what's the pattern?)
Determine if the poem has meter (is it free verse?).
Are their patterns? Look for repeated sounds, words phrases or images.
Are there emphasized sounds (assonance, consonance)? Is there onomatopoeia?
Are the stanzas regular or irregular (i.e., couplets, tercets, quatrains, or no stanzas at all)?
When you read the poem, are there places where the line or sounds cause you to pause (a caesura)?
Lastly, is figurative language used in the poem (metaphor, allusion, hyperbole, personification)?
Who is speaking? What can you tell about the speaker from their voice?
Does the poem have a tone? (solemn, carefree, reflective…?)
What is the diction? Formal, informal, colloquial?
What are significant images described in the poem.
