The podcast "The Name of War: King Philip's War and the Origins of American Identity" by Jill Lepore is about the most fatal war in American history which was of that of King Philip. Lepore describes the deaths of people during the war, many which were those of Native Americans. Causes of death varied from diseases to starvation of hunger to dying because of the cold weather. The start of King Philip's war began with the execution three Wampanoags by colonist and Indians for the murder of John Sassoman. Ultimately the war ended at the killing of King Philip in August of 1676. As commonly known about Thanksgiving, it is celebrated each year with a feast to show thanks and give prayers. Though, as claimed by Lepore, during King Philips war Thanksgiving was not celebrated due to the traumatic events occurring, there being little amounts of people and nothing to really give thanks for. At the end of the war, when King Philip was killed, was when Thanksgiving was celebrated again; at the feast in which King Philip's head stuck into a pole stood within the group. To get a better sense of the wars aftermath and damages Lepore reads a journey entry account from someone during the war. The first descriptions are of the different locations and areas, how almost nothing except maybe two or three buildings survived. All being left was ruins and ashes, everything was destroyed. People who were found by either colonist or Indians were killed; men's body parts being used as jewelry accessories and women were used to satisfy their sexual desires then brutally killed. Not even the cattle were safe from the destructive slaughtering. The journal entry allows light to be shed on the horrors experienced during the destructive war of King Philip. Reading the writings of someone who single handily went through the war makes the damages done more realistic, resulting in getting a close image to the war. They also wrote about the war to defend their conduct. The colonist of New England believed that everything going wrong was, in a way, God punishing them for all their sins. A result from every wrong thing they've made was for them to lose everything. Having to start from scratch all over again. Meanwhile, the Indians new that this belief that God was punishing the colonist was, as Lepore describes it, the colonists Achilles heel. Thus, using it to their advantage, telling the colonist that God is against them and working with the Indians The brutality of the war of King Philip and the start of America has its similarities in that both included slaughters of people and of animals. Throughout the war, the colonist believed that they had an advantage in that they knew how to read and write. Colonist claimed that having the ability to write separated men from beast. In the eyes of the colonist, the key difference between themselves and the Indians was literacy. In the terms of recent times, the way the story of the war was told began to be altered, making it seem that the colonist were always the "good guys." To help achieve this, images were reprinted. For example, the image of Mary standing nicely with a gun ready in hand. The reason of this was to create favor in the American Revolution. Overall, while colonist tried to rewrite history in their favor times has reviled the truth of our heritage and its meaning.
