Picture Book Activities
Order Description
Goal: The goal for this assignment is to analyze and examine two Caldecott award winning texts and
write a short analysis for each.
Format Requirements: The analyses is to be clear and concise and students will lose points for
improper grammar, punctuation and misspelling. Each short paper is to be no shorter than 1.5 pages;
nor longer than 3 pages in length (typed, double-spaced). The student will automatically lose
points if these limits are not followed. Include a title and reference page following APA format
(not part of the 3-6 pages of written text). Books should be referenced according to APA style (the
library has a copy of the APA Manual).
Content Requirements: Books used with these activities must be CALDECOTT WINNERS. Do not use HONOR
BOOKS.
You must select TWO of the following activities, each of which you should complete for a Caldecott
Winner that you have not used for any other project. You are to complete two different activities
done with completely different books as prescribed in the directions below. Your report for each
activity for each book should be approximately 1.5 to 3 pages for a total of 3-6 pages.
For any activity that you select, please provide an introduction, an overview of the book (1-3
paragraphs), then go into the activity, at the end of each activity, you need a conclusion.
Close Analysis: Make a close analysis of a single illustration from a distinguished Caldecott book.
Make several black and white photocopies to use as you work on the project and one to turn in with
the finished analysis (This is a strategy that you can use for yourself as you analyze the
illustration) Study the illustration you have chosen carefully, both as a whole and in its
elements. Explain why you chose the illustration and which specific elements you find worth
analysis, and create possible questions and alternative answers (at least three, please) for your
chosen illustration that you would ask your students.
Child Interview: Choose a Caldecott book that you think would be interesting to a child of your
acquaintance (your own child, a younger brother or sister, a friend or neighbor’s child, a child
you care for in a day care or as a baby sitter). Arrange a special time to read the book together
with the child, and then interview the child about his/her experience of the book. You need to
provide a short introduction of the child; please use a pseudonym for the child’s name. Ask
specific questions that give you an understanding of the child's perception of the book. Be sure
your paper includes the following:
What kind of emotional response did the child have to a specific picture?
What did the child think was most unusual about the book?
What details does the child notice about specific pictures?
Compare the child’s responses to your own: how are they different? How are they alike? Does
anything surprise you about this comparison?
Place the reference for personal communication at the end of each paragraph; NOT at the end of each
quotation. (Hasty, N., personal communication, February 4, 2016).
Online Connections: Choose a Caldecott book. Find at least three websites that support the book of
your choice. Write about your findings including a brief overview of your book (no more than two
paragraphs), descriptions of the three related websites with complete website addresses, and
explanation of how a teacher would incorporate these websites in a classroom situation in teaching
this book. Include a general description of the appropriate age and reading level for each website.
The websites should not be for adults: TeacherPayTeachers.com—type of websites. The websites should
be student friendly because you would send students to these websites to complete lessons that
enhance their learning based on the selected book.
