Photographer Analysis

Description

  1. Artist report
This list of photographers is to enhance your readings from the textbook chapters of this time period. No textbook is able to include all the photographers/artists working in a certain time period. Therefore, to support your understanding and to build up your knowledge, attached is a list of photographers working between the years 1915-1939. Please note that some of these photographers may have been active in the years before or after 1915-1939.

I know it is impossible for you guys to remember all the photographers and their work from this course, hence these assignments. From personal experience as an undergraduate, the artists I remembered the most are the ones I was assigned to research so you will be doing the same. But don't worry, I am not making you write a giant essay. Here's the steps:

Choose a photographer from this list whose LAST name shares the same first letter as your last name. If there are more than 1 name listed, choose one that you have not reported on previously.
Do a little research (your textbook, other photography books, internet, etc…). You may post your work directly on the submission page.
Introduce the photographer. Give us a little of his/her background. Tell us why he/she is notable. What kind of contribution did he/she made to science, photography, or society at large?
Attach or embed 1 example of his/her work. If you do not know how to embed an image, go to the Resource module and look up "How to embed an image" file.
Analyze the work that you just embedded or attached (In the Resources module, you will find all kinds of example on how to analyze photograph). Your analysis must have 2 parts:
Description(s)
Reflection(s)
You must provide at least 2 citations/references.

  1. Photograph analysis
Attached is a photograph for you to analyze. I listed the aspects you need to consider before any writing. It is a good exercise to go through each number on my list so you will have enough information to write your analysis. You just need to write 3 paragraphs:

1) Introduce the image, include descriptions (foreground, mid ground, background), give context (time period, weather, social, economical, global events, etc…).

2) Analyze the image using formal elements, composition, content, camera angle, etc…

3) Interpret the image, include context of the time period, the photographer's intention, your assumptions of what is happening in the photograph (based on what you read/know about the time period), the feelings this photograph gave you, etc…

Attached are examples of how to analyze a photograph. You can find the same files in the Resources module.
