Philosophy of the Mind

open book exam. Therefore, you are welcome to read notes, papers, and online articles to help inform your
answer. Any information taken from an outside source MUST be cited! ESSAY MUST BE WRITTEN IN
GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT ENGLISH.

ESSAY QUESTION**
What is the mind-body problem in philosophy of mind? What are the two main positions in the mind-body
problem? Explain the differences between Dualism and Monism (also known as Materialism). Describe these
two major philosophical beliefs. What are typical arguments in favor of each of the main positions and what are
some of the typical arguments against them? Finally, explain how do the different positions in the mind-body
problem relate to our understanding of cognition in living organisms and to the generation of artificial
intelligence.
