An introduction that draws the reader in – a “hook”
a. The reader should want to read beyond the first paragraph!
b. Share something unexpected that plays into your story.
- When and why did you decide on the professional career you are seeking?
a. What has led to your motivation for the professional career you are interested in?
b. What is that story? Remember show, not tell… - What has been your exposure to your career field of interest?
a. Build on the why the field. Once you decided on it, what did you do about it?
b. How do you know what it’s like to be in the field if you haven’t experienced aspects of it, such as caring for people/patients in a medical-like setting?
Describe some experiences. - Have you meaningfully contributed to that field in any way?
a. What are the insights you’ve gained from the above? How has it changed you?
b. Did you contribute to a situation in some way? Did you go above and beyond?
c. How your human side! - Conclusion needs to wrap the whole story up – why you?
a. Go back to the introduction and the themes that played out in the statement. What do they all say about you? What do you want to leave the reader
understanding about you and your preparedness for a career as a healthcare practitioner?
b. DO NOT spend too much time restating “Why Medicine” reasons, rather than emphasizing what you can bring to the table.
c. Sell yourself without sounding unqualified or full or yourself!
