PERSONAL STATEMENT

With a sole passion for dance, I was always enthusiastic about its various forms all around the world. Not only I learned about different cultures and ethnicities, but I also found nirvana through beats and rhythms. Pursuing medicine was something completely different that I decided to go for when I felt joy much bigger than that, after the people I cared for, got cured of their illnesses.
My journey in the medical field has been as enthusiastic and blissful as a pleasant melody. Though the dedication required seemed intimidating initially; nothing could beat the desire to learn. After all, there’s nothing that could ever stop a man driven by passion!
On my first day of clerkship; as I stood next to my attending, observing him explain the patient about his condition, I realized that the skills as a physician come with practice. Not only the theories in the textbooks but the appropriate ways of addressing the patient, interacting with them and following the code of ethics are also important as a physician.
Having being actively involved in social serving activities since my school days, the free health camps, mobile health services in rural areas, general medical evaluation and management in old age homes and homeless shelters for children during my clerkship doubled my satisfaction as I could utilize my devotion to medicine to serve the society.
During my externship with Dr. Hameed in his clinic, I learned that the healthcare management system was much more advanced in the US. The EMR which is widely used in the US was quite rare in Nepal. I realized that the availability of facilities and resources not only affected the outcome but also the approach towards patient management.
Working for almost 3 years at different healthcare settings in Nepal has definitely made me a confident doctor in patient care. Not only have I learned the practical skills but there were some memorable days when the patients had faith in me and were impressed by my interacting skills. Having gained these experiences, I feel prepared to begin my path in internal medicine residency.
Prior to beginning my residency in the US, I am very much interested in observing the duties and responsibilities that I will be handling very soon. This will help me understand the health problems faced by patients, several aspects of patient care and the healthcare system in the US in a broader context.
Discuss an observership experience at this highly reputed institution to learn the highest quality of patient care provided in the US. I believe US clinical experiences instill professional competencies, ideas, and vision which are very necessary for me to become a competent physician, an advocate for patients and a good educator.
