Personal Skills Inventory

Based on your experience developing a research proposal for this course, discuss what

you see as your areas of strength and opportunities for development. Submit a 5-page

paper outlining your personal skills inventory.

Describe any challenges that you encountered in your research process for each

section. How did you overcome them?

Discuss your areas of strength and opportunities for development aligned with the

four domains of the Vitae Research Development Framework (RDF).

Develop three specific strategies you will implement to improve your personal

skills and readiness to achieve success as a doctoral student.

Use the references in the required reading articles and locate at least three

additional articles associated with predictors of doctoral student success.

Synthesize your takeaways and describe how the research supports your

successful completion of the program.

        Challenges Encountered
  1. Defining the Research Question: One of the primary challenges I faced was formulating a clear and concise research question. I struggled to narrow down my topic and identify the specific research gap I wanted to address. To overcome this challenge, I conducted extensive literature reviews and sought feedback from my advisor and peers.
  2. Literature Search: Finding relevant and high-quality literature was another challenge. I had to learn how to effectively use databases and search engines to identify relevant sources. Additionally, I faced difficulties in evaluating the credibility and relevance of the sources I found. To overcome this, I consulted with my advisor and librarians, and I learned how to critically evaluate sources.
  3. Methodology Development: Designing a suitable methodology for my research was another hurdle. I had to consider the research questions, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. To overcome this challenge, I consulted with my advisor and other experts in my field. I also explored different research methodologies and their strengths and weaknesses.
Areas of Strength Based on my experience with this research proposal, I believe my areas of strength include:
  • Critical Thinking: I am able to analyze information critically and evaluate the validity of arguments.
  • Writing and Communication: I am able to communicate my ideas clearly and effectively in writing.
  • Time Management: I am able to manage my time effectively and meet deadlines.
Areas for Development
  • Research Design: I could improve my skills in designing rigorous and innovative research studies.
  • Data Analysis: I could enhance my ability to analyze and interpret data using appropriate statistical techniques.
  • Collaboration: I could develop stronger collaboration skills to work effectively with others on research projects.
Strategies for Improvement To improve my skills and readiness as a doctoral student, I will implement the following strategies:
  1. Seek Mentorship: I will seek mentorship from experienced researchers in my field to gain guidance and support.
  2. Take Additional Courses: I will take additional courses in research methodology, statistics, and other relevant areas to enhance my skills.
  3. Practice Collaboration: I will actively seek opportunities to collaborate with other researchers and develop my teamwork skills.
Synthesis and Conclusion Through this self-reflection exercise, I have identified my areas of strength and opportunities for development as a doctoral student. By addressing my challenges and implementing strategies for improvement, I am confident in my ability to successfully complete the program. The research I conducted for this proposal has provided me with valuable experience in conducting research, developing a research question, and writing a research paper. These skills will be essential for my future success as a doctoral student and researcher.
