Personal Identity and the Problem of Material Constitution

Consider for a moment a massive block of marble measuring 8 feet x 8 feet at its base and standing 20 feet tall. This block of marble is smooth and untouched by hammer and chisel but will soon be carved into the famous statue of David by the sculpture Michelangelo. Based on the material from this week, what do you think of the idea that the marble that exists inside the as yet uncarved block of marble is the statue of David? In other words, if we were standing there before the smooth slab of uncarved marble, do you think that the statue already exists within or not? Why or why not? Consider what your answer says about the idea of Material Constitution as a criterion for identity.
