Performance-enhancing supplements cause more harm than good in the long run.

Description

The use of performance-enhancing supplements has been constantly rising over the past few years. A survey of 1248 students aged 16 or older in 5 different US colleges and universities found that 66 percent of students use performance-enhancing supplements. (Lieberman HR, Oct 2015) My essay will explore the reasons for the popularity and the side effects caused by performance-enhancing effects. My research question is going to be whether these substances are worth using or is the increase in usage due to the hype surrounding them along with marketing strategies.
In this essay, I will argue that performance-enhancing supplements cause more harm than good in the long run. I will start my essay with an introduction on the topic of nutritional supplements, explaining what they are and their usage. I will start with the Creatine and BCAA. The first part of the essay will explain how and in which context are supplements used. In the second part, I will explain what positive effects are associated with those supplements and their marketing strategies. In the last part, I will explain more about the long-term side effects and little to no positive side effects of many nutritional supplements.

Mallett and Hanrahan attempted to use Self Determination Theory (STD), which identifies the social and contextual conditions that create a motivational climate, to discover what motivates elite athletes to perform at such a high level. Athletes usually experience either intrinsic or extrinsic motivational factors to inspire them to demonstrate their competence at an elite level. Their research indicated the following: elite athletes are highly driven by personal goals; they have strong self-confidence, and sport is central to their lives. This study is useful for my research because my research paper explores why certain athletes leave professional sports to pursue coaching careers. (101 words)
