Oral Presentation Assignment

In this assignment, you will give a 6-minute presentation to your workshop participants. Some of the
things you will be using will be discussed in the lecture on Presentations.
Your presentation will be your own evaluation of the ‘TED’ talk that you have chosen. TED talks have
been developed over the years to promote critical thought and the introduction of new ideas. Some of
the best communicators are invited to do a TED talk (e.g., Steve Jobs) and you can find them on
https://www.ted.com/talks.
Have a browse through the library and find a talk that captures your imagination (please no adult
themes). You will be expected to analyze the presentation and the presenter, not the content. The
talk does not have to be science-related, but something that you find fascinating and able to
evaluate and share. In order to do a comprehensive evaluation, you should watch the entire TED talk
several times.
You can base your analysis around the criteria discussed in the lecture, but you should be able to add
more information and your own views on the talk and/or the presenter. The learning that underpins
this assignment is to think carefully about what works in a presentation, what works as a presenter,
what could perhaps have been done better, and learning to handle the feelings you have when
preparing and delivering a presentation. You will then be able to incorporate some of these things
into your own presentations. When you have done your analysis you need to complete your
PowerPoint presentation. Make sure you have practiced this at home, out loud. This will help you
sort out what sentences you can speak, and the information flow on the slides.
