The essay is OPED, it should contain the following elements:
I. Your precis: as usual, this 4-sentence paragraph should cover the essay that you have chosen to write on.
II. Your thesis statement: 1-2 sentences that state your opinion on the essay you chose (what you liked/disliked, what you agree/disagree with).
III. A small analysis paragraph: This is different than the analysis in the rhetorical analysis essay. Here, it is only one paragraph long, and it should cover only
3 points (tone, theme, language, or the rhetorical appeals). Make sure to be as concise as possible. Remember, the focus here is on the opinion, not the
extended analysis.
IV. Opinion section (2-3 paragraphs): now is your chance to say what you liked/disliked, what you agreed/disagreed with, and what you find to be the
strengths/weaknesses of the essay. Be careful with using the first person perspective here--your informed opinion must be expressed using sophisticated
"evaluation" terms of critique, and you must support your opinion with quotes from the text. If you like, you may synthesize (but you don't have to).
V. Conclusion (mini): Basically, this is a rephrasal of your thesis statement.
The essay should be on Meredith Hall's “shunned” essay. It has to be between 900-1000 words long
