Nursing Leadership

  1. Define power and its aspects: relational, dependence, sanctioning. Empowerment for nurses may consist of three parts: a workplace that has structures to promote empowerment, a psychological belief in one’s ability to be empowered, and acknowledgment that there is power in the relationships and caring that nurses provide.
  2. Conflict management techniques stress the importance of communication, assertive dialogue, and empathy; review methods and strategies. Explain the face negotiation theory.
  3. Review win-win, win-lose, and lose-lose outcomes; define and discuss negotiation. Discuss the pros and cons of compromise versus avoidance.
  4. Awareness of one’s own style and the recognition of other people’s styles contribute to effective management of conflict. Discuss the five conflict-handling intentions: competing, collaborating, avoiding, accommodating, and compromising.
