During my placement in Royal Darwin Hospital, NT Australia Isolation Paediatric Ward 5B, I am faced with the dilemma about the issue of cross contamination between kids. As much as we wanted to minimise the spread of infection, the likelihood of transmission still exists. Even if we educate parents, visitors and the kids about contact precautions and proper hand hygiene, there will be someone whose non-compliant. I have notice some as well of the paediatric patient’s parents are very concern of why their children needs to be in the Isolation ward, and they keep on asking is their baby really sick? Why they need to be in a single room? Also, if nurses, student nurses and allied health care team become busy, unintentionally they could cross contaminate when going to one patient to another. It is quite a dilemma since we need to follow the standard nursing practice which is to prevent the spread of the disease and had to consider respect of other culture and values. Nevertheless, regardless of differences in beliefs and priorities, becoming patient advocates like giving continuous education and being conscientious in what we are doing taking into account the safety and welfare of both patients and colleagues would be a great example of becoming an ethical and professional nurse.
