Nonprofit hospitals in the USA have struggled with declining reimbursements

In recent years, nonprofit hospitals in the USA have struggled with declining reimbursements from insurers and rising operational costs. Though very few nonprofit hospitals have traditionally been donor-driven, more are seeking philanthropic support and beginning active fundraising.
One area of rising activity has been “grateful patient” fundraising, which asks patients happy with their care to give to support the hospital’s mission. Though patients are a natural donor base, fundraising from grateful patients poses important ethical and operational challenges to hospitals.

In the two page answer, (1) explain the ethical risks hospitals face in deciding whether to fundraise from grateful patients; (2) draw on the fundraising strategy concepts discussed in class to discuss the practical merits of this type of fundraising and (3) propose strategies nonprofit hospitals should pursue — when, if ever, should hospitals fundraise from patients, and what best practices are appropriate?
