Each part is listed below and described: I) Basic Information on the Work – these should be listed: [SINGLE SPACE] • Artist • Title • Date • Material • Size • Current location • Signature(s), if any, and where • Restoration Date(s), if applicable II) An Essay about the Work – this will form the bulk of your paper, and should be written in complete sentences in paragraph form. The essay consists of: [DOUBLE SPACE] A) Description of the work itself and its iconography: • What is its subject? • Medium/materials? • Style: colors, composition, line, carving process if applicable, etc. B) Context: • Artist: Brief biography; when did the artist make the work, and during what part of his career? • Patronage: Who commissioned it? Why? • Original location • Original Function/Purpose: Why was it made? C) Summary of Scholarship on Work within Art Historical Literature – What have scholars discovered and/or written about the work?
