MENTIONED IN THE DETAIL SECTION BELOW Project description This assignment combines research, analysis and speculation. In 5 to 6 pages, and referring to 2 to 3 sources (at least one of which is from our course kit - you dont have to use the course kit, just use 3 academic sources), read an urban object, such as a billboard, bench, fence, wall, water fountain, street lighting, public square, stop sign, bus shelter, info pillar, bike lane, sewer. You can use any example on this list or come up with your own, but you are encouraged to look at both a general object (billboards), and a specific example of it (a particular billboard image in a particular location). Specific guidelines for Urban Object assignment Provide a detailed description of the object and its context; you are strongly encouraged to include images and a map to give a sense of the surroundings; Provide some history of the object: When and how did it come into use? How has its design changed over time? What was the object supposed to produce socially? Was it introduced in response to a problem? Here you are trying to give some context or big picture for when your object was developed or introduced; Make connections to course material: What do we know of the historical context from our readings? Do any theories from the course help you to understand how the object functions as part of urban life?; and include personal observations (What is your connection to the object? Course kits are available at the York Bookstore, and one copy will be on reserve at the Scott library. Referred to as (Kit) in syllabus. There are additional readings online that you have to retrieve yourself, some through the York Library website - referred to as (online) and others on Moodle, though these are not listed in the syllabus and are not mandatory. We will discuss in class how to get the ones marked as (online), and otherwise you should regularly check our Moodle course. - These are the course readings, if you can access them i would be so grateful if you could use them.
