MEET THE PARENTS on netflix
See the syllabus for instructions on this assignment. Please watch either Meet the Parents OR How to Loose a Guy in Ten Days.
Key Reminders:
• This paper must follow a very specific format and is graded relatively harshly.
• This paper may be different from past papers you have written and this is NOT academic writing, but rather a class assignment.
• Papers that tend to do the best on this assignment start a new paragraph for each term.
• Your paper must be SPECIFIC in terms of the concept you are using. Each concept listed here is purposely broad so you can use your creativity in how you want to analyze the movie. For example, if the concept listed was “Characteristics of Interpersonal Communication,” you would want to go into the specifics such as communication is imperfect, irreversible, consequential, or dynamic in your analysis. You do not need to include every specific concept under the broad concepts, but must choose at least one. You should end up with ten specific concepts.
• Don’t forget to bold each concept.
Broad Concept List
Communication Competence
Communication Accommodation Theory
Cultural Dimensions
Sources of self-knowledge
Characteristics that increase probability of selection (hint: starts with point of view)
Attributions (internal/external vs. stable/unstable)
Meanings of words (hint: connotative vs. denotative)
Channels of Nonverbal Communication
Forms of non-listening
Appraisal theory of emotions

The final paper in this class is an analysis of a movie. The objectives of this analysis include: (1) demonstrating your understanding of various interpersonal communication concepts, (2) applying interpersonal concepts to scenarios, (3) synthesizing concepts to show higher-order thinking, and (4) evaluating behavior and giving advice backed up by content from your textbook for this class.
You are to view the movie during your own time and analyze the movie using ten of the concepts provided to you on Canvas. Your analysis should include the following:
Introduction: Preview which concepts you will be discussing. Why these concepts? How will you be discussing them? What do these concepts have in common?
Body: For the body of this paper, make sure you bold each concept used. Define each concept and describe the scenario in the movie in which the concept is portrayed. Then, interpret why this scenario encapsulated this concept and describe how this concept influenced the interaction and characters.
Conclusion: Discuss the larger themes found in your analysis. How are these concepts related? How does one concept lead to or influence another? Using your knowledge and skills from class, what advice might you give to these characters? Why? Back up your advice with class content.
Format: This assignment needs to be stapled, in 12 pt Times New Roman Font with one-inch margins. This paper should be between 5-7 pages.
Movie analyses must be submitted both electronically AND in hard copy in order to receive a grade.
