Discussion: Measures of Quality
Health care quality is a nationally recognized topic that is addressed through public policies, licensure, and accreditation standards for health care professionals and organizations. Throughout history, numerous organizations have been involved in developing health care quality and safety initiatives.
The Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed quality and safety indicators for various health care systems. These indicators seek to establish accountability for health care organizations through a reporting system, which is available to the public. For this Discussion, explore various accrediting organizations and specific measures that pertain to quality. In your research on accrediting organizations, consider how these quality measures affect quality outcomes, support ethical principles, and influence the delivery of clinical services.
To prepare:
• Select one specific quality indicator from the Week 2 Discussion and compare it with those outlined in this week’s Learning Resources.
• Review the accrediting body standards that pertain to your organization focusing on those standards that require your organization to define its quality management program.
• Consider regulatory requirements at the state or national level that affect quality outcomes in your organization.
• Ask yourself: How do the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) restricted reimbursements affect quality management or improvement efforts at my organization? How do these standards and regulations influence or support ethical principles and influence patient care and nursing practice?

Quality indicators are essential in assessing the observance of various guidelines in fostering and improving health. Additionally, these indicators help in accelerating and implementing the use of evidence based techniques in clinical practice. Over the recent years, several indicators have been developed with an objective of ensuring that acute treatment for stroke patient has been developed for rehabilitation state (Green et al., 2011). Stroke inflicts a cumbersome load on patients and the society at large. Stroke is the abrupt interruption of supply of blood to the brain. Stroke effects is dependent on the part of the brain affected. There exist three types of stroke namely Ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and transient ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is caused due to obstruction of vessel supplying blood to the brain. Hemorrhagic stroke, commonly caused by high blood pressure occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures. Transient ischemic attack also known as mini stoke occurs when a temporary clot occurs (Thiangchanya et al., 2008).
In addition to reducing quality of life after diagnosis, family and friends of the patient are affected significantly. As such, it is necessary to determine the role of nurses in ensuring that patients receive quality care that results to best outcomes (Heslop, & Lu, 2014).
Outcome indicators allow the measurement of management of systems, patient satisfaction, utilization of resources and provision of care. Since nurses play a critical role in management of stroke, they are required to provide and produce evidence of impact on patient outcome. During the rehabilitation program, stroke patients need care from professionals. Currently acute intervention therapies are embraced as the best interventions to boost quality of life and prevent stroke form recurring during rehabilitation. Caregivers quantify the anticipated nursing care features, and the essential tools needed to monitor the quality of care offered (Heslop, & Lu, 2014).
In conclusion, there is need for ample and adequate research on the impact of quality indicators on testing the effects of nursing practice on outcomes on stroke patients in rehabilitation stage. Sufficient evidence on this area will help to focus on the significance of models and other relevant theories that can help foster quality of life. Additionally, findings inferred from these studies will offer a practical basis on the available theoretical framework.
