MASS BALANCES WITH REACTIONS

Remember the general accounting equation: IN – OUT + GEN – CONS = ACC.
Glucose is one of the primary sources of energy in the body. Consider the fate of ingested glucose, which is absorbed into the blood stream in the digestive system. As the blood with glucose circulates throughout the body, it is taken up into cells. Write an accounting equation for glucose in the blood, leaving out the terms which you know should be zero. Define your system, and explain why you included or excluded each term.
When glucose is taken up into liver cells, it is converted into glycogen, which is more easily stored in the liver. If the body needs more glucose, the glycogen is converted back into glucose and released back into the blood stream. Write an accounting equation for glucose in the liver, leaving out the terms which you know should be zero. Define your system, and explain why you included or excluded each term.
