"""" The image of the wings in the story, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is
very unique. The
beginning of the story sets the tone with the dreary imagery of the sky, lack of sun and the crabs getting into
the home. The
author makes it very clear that this is not the "norm" for the town and then once that is established, the man
with the enormous
wings come into play. The description of his wings and their condition aligns with the weather at the time.
This image is impactful because the wings' descriptions are parallel to the condition of the characters' lives at
this time. The
condition of the wings is once described as filled with parasites. Chickens eat parasites off of each other and it
is said in the story
text that the chickens are searching and eating the parasites off of the angel's wings which is improving his
situation.
As the story develops and the characters decide to monetize the angel's visit which is another parallel to the
angel's wing
condition. The ability to save the money puts the characters in a better financial spot for which they improve
their surroundings.
Although they don't invest in the angel, they do care for him and allow him to stay there. The longer the good
fortune goes on,
the more they allow their baby the ability to play with the angel.
The imagery seems to suggest that the more they allowed the angel to "be", the more the angel recovered
through time.
When the angel went to be alone and Elisenda witnessed him growing new feathers in his wings, the imagery
suggested that he
was healed or improved and then he subsequently flew off. This further shows the impact that the wing
imagery had on the story
because they were consistently parallel with the rest of the story
