Managing NGOs, particularly development NGOs, presents many of the same challenges as managing other kinds of organisations, but there are also unique challenges arising from the special nature of these organisations and the diversity of types of NGOs. In this session we will look at the idea of management generally, at how the NGO sector views and approaches the idea of management, and at some specific management challenges that arise for NGOs, including: values and organisational culture; professionalisation; accountability, transparency, performance monitoring; governance and organisational structure; leadership; funding and independence; managing growth (“scaling up”); human resources; organisational learning; and growth of the NGO sector.
