Love and Marriage

In Chapter 12, Conley describes the historical development of family life. Similarly, historian Stephanie Coontz has done considerable research on family structures across time and place.Take a few minutes to watch Stephanie Coontz’s Pop! Tech talk called, “On Marriage,” in which describes the role of marriage in social life, as well as the evolving qualities that constitute a good marriage.
Based on Conley’s chapter, Coontz’s talk, and/or your own experiences, what are some of the reasons why people get married? What, if anything, about Coontz’s talked surprised you? Do you think marriage is a strong or shrinking social institution, and why?
