Scott Russell Sanders discusses his experiences with the contemplation of the opposite sex. As a boy he
became aware of the differences between men and women; and as a man, he observed how men looked at
women; from college dorm pin-ups to peep show sirens.
His essay is quite earnest, so much so that it almost amusing. He reveals himself to be a sensitive person as
he speculates why some women choose to make spectacles of themselves.
What do you think of the way women are depicted in life and the arts in the present? Are women held up to
unrealistic expectations in today’s society?
What changes have you seen in your lifetime about the expectations that society places on women.
