We choose the topic according to our major, which is marketing. However we choose the field of fitness industry. Its a group project and my part has 3 questions.
1. Relevant laws [40 points]: What are the laws, rules, guidelines, etc that govern or that are relevant to your chosen profession in UAE? If there are no specific UAE laws, you can pick relevant laws from Canada, US, or the UK and apply them to your profession. Points to consider:
a) Is this profession regulated? By whom? In what way? For example, lawyers and doctors must go to law/med school and pass different exams and be members of professional law societies and medical associations in order to practice.
b) Are there laws that tell you what your profession can or cannot do? For example, advertising laws will prohibit lying about your product. Describe these laws and summarize in general terms what these laws say. This is the most important part of this section. You do not have to read a 100 page statute/law, but look at the table of contents to find the most relevant parts and summarize them in general terms. You can also rely on secondary sources like news articles reporting on what advertising laws there are. Choose reliable sources, e.g. don’t quote a blog unless it is a blog of a law firm or a reputable organization or industry association.
c) Are there voluntary or professional associations that provide guidelines of how your profession should act, i.e. codes of conduct? For example, law society is a professional organization for lawyers. Describe the association(s) and summarize in general terms what it/they do(es).
-(based roughly on single-spaced, 1 inch margins, size 11 font).
-Use lots of headings and sub-headings, but note this is NOT a short answer response. It is a report with different sections.
What you will be graded on
1. Comprehensive explanations. Incorporation of and understanding of course concepts.
2. Organized, logical and analytical reasoning. Commercial and practical thinking.
3. Quality and depth of research and analysis. Do not rely on resources like Wikipedia or random blogs. Choose reliable sources such as government websites, law firm websites, or official organizations.
4. Other points for consideration:
• Are there any unique characteristics about the UAE that impact the legal framework of your profession? For example, there are 200 nationalities here which could impact HR practices and anti-discrimination laws. As the UAE is only 44 years old and is an emerging market, it will not have developed or comprehensive legislation like in the US.
• Consider the macro and economic environment, e.g. during the economic boom time, there was a lot of development and properties were being sold by unscrupulous developers which led to more robust real estate laws in the UAE. Sarbanes Oxley Act was enacted in the US after Enron and other corporate scandals. Anti-bribery and environmental laws arise out of corruption/environmental problems.
• Life is not broken up into courses or chapters. Use your knowledge from other courses, work experience, and life in general to help you develop a comprehensive analysis relevant to the legal environment of your future job.
5. Reference list: Remember to include reference lists and have proper citation.
a) Up to 20 points will deducted for inadequate citation. Proper citation in accordance with the APA Style: https://www.library.cornell.edu/research/citation/apa
b) Direct quotes are to be included in quotation marks and if you are using someone else’s idea, cite it accordingly.
