On pages 525 – 529 of the Fieldbook there is a section on building community by Juanita Brown, Bryan Smith
and David Isaacs. Read this and discuss the ideas that might help in building shared vision and team learning
in an organization. What might work in your organization? Do you think of action research or action learning as
a way of building shared vision? How can what you learned in this class about the relationship of personal
vision and shared vision inform your choices?

Proposed Discussion prompt introduction:
An organization simply cannot evolve without learning. “Solving a problem, introducing a product, and
reengineering a process all require seeing the world in a new light and acting accordingly” (Garvin, 2014). The
strong link between learning and continuous improvement exhibits the importance of implementing training and
development programs within organizations to encourage forward-thinking problem solving; skills that help
businesses evolve along with their customers and market competitors. That said, learning is ineffective if it is
all for nothing. That is to say, that having a clearly communicated shared vision goes hand-in-hand with team
learning.
Peter Senge said, “If there are no personal visions, forget shared visions” (MIT Teaching Systems Lab, 2018).
Using the resources provided below, how can personal visions become a shared vision? What are the benefits
of working in a team versus individual learning? Support your argument with evidence or examples from your
own experiences or your readings in this course.
