Each student should prepare a short (2 to 4 page) mini-case describing a work-related leadership dilemma that he or she has faced.
Example: Fire or do not fire a subordinate who in the past helped you get your job, but whose performance recently has deteriorated.
Example: Accept or do not accept unpaid membership in the company’s total quality task force, when you are already having difficulty keeping up with your own work.
Provide enough background for the reader to be able to understand the complexity of the situation. Please use a pseudonym (rather than your own name) and write in the third person (rather than the first person). Mini-cases must be real, and need not present “life or death” dramas, but instead situations that you really faced. Avoid fiction and exaggeration. Please do not write about the decision to leave full-time work or another country to study for a graduate degree.
Suggested format: Divide your paper into short sections, each with a heading in bold font. Start with a paragraph to present the dilemma. Next provide background on the people and organization, as well as context information. Next describe in more detail the dilemma. Finally, indicate what (if anything) the decision was. If appropriate provide a short epilogue: “what happened.”
Deliverables: (1) An individual paper (not exceeding 4 pages) that describes an ethical or developmental dilemma, following the format requirements .
