Part I: What were the two most interesting things, one about your selected topic and one about the process of completing the assignment that you learned while constructing your Annotated Bibliography and why?
I already knew a lot about neurofeedback going in to the annotated bibliography, but I didn’t know that practitioners and researchers were now using near-infrared spectroscopy and real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging. These two testing modules will allow researchers to go deeper and gain a clearer understanding of the brain’s function. Along with the same topic, the second most interesting thing that I learned from completing the annotated bibliography was that neurofeedback training goes far beyond the frontal and prefrontal cortex. Researchers now are finding that neurofeedback increases motor system excitability, induces neuroplasticity, and can teach individuals to self-regulate their amygdala, which is so important in treating such things as PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc.
Part II: What were the three most interesting aspects of this course? Why did you find these particularly interesting? What will
you take away from the course that you didn’t know before and believe will prove helpful to know in the future and how do you see yourself applying your course take away?
The first and biggest interesting aspect of this course for me was having that a-ha moment when I realized that everything that I learned throughout my time at APU was somehow integrating together into the final work that I was doing. During some of the courses here, I would get frustrated at the amount of time it would take me to complete an assignment. During this course it was kind of matter-of-fact. It is a true testament to repetition! We have all written so many papers! Second, the career opportunities research was extremely eye-opening. Although I have my career choice and grad school picked out, I also found alternatives that I am also interested in pursuing, and that I could accomplish with my disability. The third most interesting aspect of this course was absolutely my interview with a professional. I had already studied the topic, but she gave me so much more information than I could have ever gotten from a textbook. She also offered her help if I want to pursue a career in the field! That is beyond valuable! During this course, we were asked to write papers at a much higher level than we have been during the bachelor’s program. The demands of this course is a preparation for grad school work, which will be applied in the future.
