1) Construct a chart (like last week) itemizing all of the stakeholders you think Chiquita should have considered before deciding to make the payments described in the case. Present them in two groups: market or non-market stakeholders. Note their interests and what kinds of power each has relative to this case. (A takeaway from last week's case was to "cast the net wide" when identifying stakeholders. Consider all stakeholders that could affect or be affected by the decision Chiquita made to pay the paramilitary group in Colombia. Consult the chart (Exhibit 1.B) in Chapter One to determine which stakeholder "categories" are relevant and applicable to this case, then determine if subsets of those categories should be recognized.
2) Add an asterisk at the bottom of the chart and explain which stakeholder’s interests you think were well served by Chiquita’s decision to pay the paramilitary group and which were not.
3) During the time that Chiquita made the payments described in the case, an estimated 20,000 Columbian citizens lost their lives at the hands of paramilitary/guerilla groups in Colombia, a large portion of them at the hands of the group named in the case that Chiquita paid – but none of Chiquita’s 3000+ employees were harmed.
The payments were made during two periods, as follows:
Period 1 – started when Chiquita was first approached by the group to pay until the time the US government declared the group as "terrorist."
Period 2 – began when the US government officially designated the group as terrorist and made it unlawful to support. Period 2 ended when Chiquita was found guilty of breaking the law and made to may a $25 M fine.
Answer the following questions
3a), 3b), 3c) and 3d)
Individually apply, separately and in turn, each of the four methods of moral reasoning (3a. Virtue; 3b) Utilitarian; 3c) Rights; 3d) Justice) to determine the ethicality of Chiquita’s payments to the USDF in Period 1 and Period 2.
Begin each of the four sections of Question 3 (a., b., c. and d.) by completing the following two sentences: (Note: each sentence may require several sentences to complete There is no length limit for your answer.)
"According to the ______method of moral reasoning, an action is ethical if………………"
"The weakness(es)/limitations of this method of moral reasoning is/are…………….."
(Note: Check Chap. 5 to ensure sure your definitions and understanding of method limitations are accurate.)
Following the definition and limitations of each method, apply that method to the case as a tool to determine whether Chiquita was ethical or not ethical in paying the USDF. State the results of your work (ethical or not ethical for each of the two periods. Provide a thoughtful and thorough explanation of why you think the method supports those results.
Repeat the above for each of the remaining three methods of moral reasoning.
4) Tally the results of applying the four methods.
Do all of the methods support the same position on the case (ethical or not ethical) in Period 1? What about Period 2? Explain exceptions.
5) If all of the methods do not support the same position, the text suggests more work will be needed to determine if an action is ethical or not.
