Italian ideas head north

Description

Congratulations! You have been appointed as a museum curatorial team member. Our team goal is to organize an exhibition focusing on 16th century art produced outside Italy. Our theme is how Italian art ideas were adopted by artists outside Italy. By the end of this discussion, we will have compiled a collection of wide-ranging works that reflect Italian borrowings.

Initial Post: Brainstorming
Step 1: The first step in our curatorial process is to brainstorm a list of those style qualities and subjects that are specifically Italian. Your initial post to the discussion will simply list 3 qualities that can be seen in Italian Renaissance, Venetian, or Mannerist works.

a. Describe each quality in one or two sentences.

b. With each quality on your list, identify a representative Italian work.

c. Include a link (the URL) to each image in your post.

Also, respond to a classmate to critique or clarify his/her ideas. It is fine to use examples from the text. By sharing our ideas, we can each develop an eye for Italian qualities.

For example: Like so many Italian Renaissance compositions, Renaissance portraits tended to be centered, showing a stable balance. A representative work would be Raphael’s Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione, c.1514-1515, oil on canvas, Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Final Post: Exhibition Piece
Your final post will analyze a work for the exhibition. Choose one 16th century artwork produced outside Italy that you feel borrows on Italian ideas. Each of the following artists was inspired in some way by Italian ideas, although there were certainly others artists.

In choosing one artwork by a non-Italian artist for the exhibition, identify it, noting artist, title, date, medium, and present location. Include a link (the url) to an image of this exhibition piece in your post.

After the identification, write a paragraph or two making a case for the Italian influence in your piece. Describe details to help make your argument. Include any information you have that might account for the artist’s knowledge of Italian art. Think of this last post as information for the museum visitor, a short essay that might be available as a gallery wall text or entry in the exhibition catalogue. The intent is to inform the museum-goer. Be sure to cite your sources.

Discussion Expectations
Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings from the module with proper APA (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. style formatting.

Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59 PM EST. Your responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 PM EST.

After you have posted, read through the postings of your peers. Choose (at least) two of your peers’ posts to respond to. The posts you choose to respond to do not necessarily have to be classmates’ initial posts.

Each response to a peer should be (at least) approximately 100 words in length and should contribute to the discussion in progress. All responses to classmates should be substantive. That is, they should go beyond simple agreement or disagreement with classmates’ posts.

Superior participation in the discussion is demonstrated when you include a variety of some of the following:

Expand on ideas, analyze and evaluate, compare and contrast, synthesize, debate, seek common ground, inject knowledge, provide current information from cultural or world events, etc.
Integration of the reading or viewing materials into posts is evident, engaging and appropriate.
Reach out to different peers in each thread so that everyone is included and everyone receives a response.
Monitor the discussion often and respond to feedback and comments in a prompt manner.
Welcome feedback from others, both appreciative and constructive feedback. Share what you learned from the peer’s post that has changed your view. Discuss how your views have been expanded because you have heard other perspectives.
Add a question at the end of your post so that others are more likely to respond to you.
Describe what was difficult for you to understand in the reading or viewing materials. Discuss what you still have a problem understanding and why.
