Investigation into Science Vocabulary Study

Order Description Your main RQs could be: RQ1 What are key scientific words in the Year 7 science scheme of work? Answered in lit rev and investigation RQ2 To what extent is there a gap between the scientific vocabulary of Year 7 students with EAL and their non-EAL peers? Answered in lit rev but mostly the investigation RQ3 How might EAL learners be supported? Answered in lit rev and to be done in Part 3 I’m still unconvinced about mixing up PP with EAL – what do you think? Just look at EAL in your data? So I would suggest: Report on your investigation of vocabulary levels in pupils plus the stuff you did on textbooks and the scheme of work to find the vocab (RQ1 &2) In your introduction and rationale - what are you doing and why is this important generally, to you and to your school? In the lit review - structuring it something like this: 1. What is scientific vocabulary - generally and in school science? Clive Sutton’s book etc 2. What challenges does scientific vocabulary present teachers and learners with? 3. What happens if students do not have appropriate scientific vocabulary: - on pupils e.g. cognitive effects (to them as learners of science) - on pupils e.g. how they are alienated/included in the classroom - on teachers e.g. quality of teaching (especially how well they explain concepts, select and produce resources, ask questions and interact with pupils) - on teachers e.g. how well they can assess learning and progress - - on pupils and teachers e.g. to teacher-student relationships - on pupils and teachers e.g. classroom climate I wouldn't bother writing about Ofsted grading of your teaching as this is now defunct and they're not going to be doing this anymore - this study is all about you and your pupils? 4. What can be done for pupils who have low levels of scientific vocabulary? Then you make the argument that unless a teacher knows pupils' starting points (actual scientific vocabulary) then they cannot tailor their teaching accordingly - hence the rationale for your study - a study to find this out for your Yr 7 class. The essay should have the following headings: Introduction Aims Professional Purposes Research Questions (Please stick to the research questions mentioned above) Literature Review Rationale for the present research Limitations of my research Research design Sampling and data collection Data Analysis Summary Discussion of findings Conclusion References
