Investigation into peoples views on minimum wage

An investigation into peoples’ views on the minimum wage. Sample source: Dickens, R., Riley, R. and Wilkinson, D. (2015) A Re-examination of the UK Minimum Wage on Employment. Economica, 82 (238), 841-864 For the descriptive element you can consider: • The topic and focus of the article (What is the article about?) • The aim/purpose of the research presented in the article • The methodology of research (Did the research assume a quantitative or qualitative methodology? What methods were used? Over what timescale was the research undertaken? What was the sample size? Where was the research undertaken? Who were the respondents?) • The key findings of the research • The overall argument/conclusion made by the researcher(s) For the analytical element you can consider: • The relevance of each article: ? In what ways do the themes, data, and/or results the article relate to your own project topic? ? In what ways will the information, findings or arguments of the article be useful to you when you are writing your project? • The contribution of each source/ article to the literature ? Does the author(s) refer to other research/ studies on your chosen topic, and if so what do they think of them? ? Did their findings show similar or different things to other research they referred to? Do they use similar or different methods? If their results are different to other research is this because they use different methods? ? Does the article you selected form part of a consensus (general agreement) or part of a debate (general disagreement) in the literature? • The strengths and weaknesses (limitations) of the article ? Are the methods appropriate to the aims set by the author? Are there alternative methods that might have produced better, more reliable or more appropriate data? ? Are the arguments made clear and logical? Do the results or conclusions follow from the data collected? ? Are the results generalizable? Do they apply to a wider group than the sample? Do they apply to wider groups than the specified population?
