I-It, I-You, I-Thou Relationships:

  • Reflect on three relationships in your life: one where you treat the other person as an object (I-It), one where you acknowledge them as separate but acknowledge their presence (I-You), and one where you experience a deep connection and shared understanding (I-Thou). Describe each relationship and how it makes you feel.

Communication Rules in Your Family of Origin:

  • Think about two unspoken rules or patterns of communication in your family. How did these rules affect the way you interacted with each other? Were they positive or negative? How do they influence your communication now?
  • Have you chosen to adopt or reject any of these communication rules in your own life? Why or why not?

Communication Competence:

  • Who do you consider a highly competent communicator in your life? What specific skills do they possess that make them stand out? Have you observed them using these skills in a particular situation?
  • How can you develop your own communication skills to become more like this person?

Ethical Choices in Interpersonal Communication:

  • Describe a situation where you had to make an ethical choice regarding communication. What was the dilemma? What communication strategies did you use to address it?
  • Looking back, would you do anything differently? What did you learn from this experience?
