Perhaps because of my interest in internet language, Chapter 4 is my favorite chapter in this book. (I mean, who thinks about doing a genre analysis of email scams? I LOVE this!)
• Blommaert argues that the authors of these messages have several highly advanced competences. What are those competences? Give a specific example of each.
• And yet, the email authors’ “knowing what” is not matched by their “knowing how.” What gives them away? Which of these features did you use in the “scam email” that I asked you to create earlier?
• What are the similarities and differences between the data discussed in Chapter 4 with the Wesbank literacy data in Chapter 3?
